The Canadian Council of the Americas – Alberta (CCA-Alberta), the Latin America Research Centre (LARC) and the Canada West Foundation (CWF) are delighted to extend this invitation to attend to our up-coming breakfast seminar to learn about this unprecedented collaborative action. The Pacific Alliance is an initiative launched in July 2012 by Chile, Peru, Colombia and Mexico - the most dynamic, most open economies and, for Canada, politically like-minded countries in the western hemisphere to seamlessly link their economies to better trade with each other and Asia. These countries have a combined population of 210 million persons, their GDP represents 35% of Latin America and the Caribbean altogether, average per capita GDP of close to US$13,000 and average above 5% annual growth compared to 1.7% in the U.S. and negative rates in most of Europe. The Pacific Alliance, as a block, represents the 2nd largest trading partner to Western Canada, has over ⅓ of Latin America’s population and would be the world’s 8th largest economy, according to the CWF.
We are pleased to welcome host ambassadors to Canada from the Pacific Alliance’s four founding members: Ambassador Jose Antonio Bellina from Peru, Ambassador Roberto Ibarra from Chile, Ambassador Nicolas LLoreda-Ricaurte from Colombia (Pro Tempore Presidency of the Alliance) and Ambassador Francisco Suarez from Mexico.
- Ambassador José Antonio Bellina
Mr. Bellina has served as Ambassador of Peru to Canada since April 2010. He joined the Peruvian Foreign Service in 1977 and has served at Peruvian Embassies: Switzerland, Mission of Peru to United Nations in New York, Washington, DC and Argentina. He was Ambassador of Peru to Panama, held a variety of posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru and prior to his most recent appointment, was Vice Minister (Deputy) for Defense Policies at the Ministry of Defense of Peru.
- Ambassador Roberto Ibarra
Mr. Ibarra has served as Ambassador of Chile to Canada since June 16, 2010. Previously he was Director General of Foreign Policy in the Chilean Foreign Ministry and served as Deputy Consul of Chile in Rio de Janeiro; Consul General of Chile in Munich, Germany; Counselor at the Chilean Embassy in Italy; and as Minister Counselor at the Chilean mission to the European Union.
- Ambassador Nicolás LLoreda-Ricaurte
Mr. Lloreda has served as Ambassador of Colombia to Canada since February 14, 2013. Previously he was the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Colombia in Washington, D.C. Mr. Lloreda has practiced law in Washington, D.C., served as Director General of the Andean Community and spent four years with the Colombian Government Trade Bureau in Washington, D.C., where he served as Director of the Trade Bureau and Minister Counselor of the Colombian Embassy.
- Ambassador Francisco Suárez
Mr. Suárez has served as Ambassador of Mexico to Canada since June 10, 2013. Previously he served as Secretary General of the Colosio Foundation, Vice President of the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations; Executive Director on the Executive Board of the IMF; Financial Director at Nacional Financiera; Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit; and Director General of Banco Mexicano Somex, now Banco Santander. He was also a Federal Congressman and served as Ambassador of Mexico to the OECD.
The four Ambassadors will share their analysis and insights on the economic union, the impact and vision from their respective countries, the advantages and the challenges of integrating these four and other economies. Our panel will be moderated by Dr. Stephen Randall, Director of LARC.
We hope you can join us and take advantage of first-hand knowledge and the exciting networking opportunity.
