The Canadian Council for the Americas Alberta is the pre-eminent link between Alberta-based businesses and the markets of Latin America and the Caribbean. Through a variety of informational events and networking opportunities, CCA’s mission is to forge enhanced trade linkages between Alberta companies and countries of this region.

CCA’s members and audience are composed of large, medium and small size organizations in the oil and gas and another sectors interested in doing business or expanding its operations to Mexico and Latin America. Other members include government agencies and educational institutions which mandate is on international trade and investment opportunities between Canada and the Americas region.

CCA Alberta is a non-for-profit organization which has been in operations since 1992. CCA’s Board of Directors is formed by corporate members working in in the energy and other strategic sectors for Alberta interested in the development of relationships and trade development with the Americas region.

Miguel Cortines is the President of CCA Alberta since December 2014. Miguel has served CCA since 2005 in different capacities including Vice President of Operations. On behalf of CCA, Miguel has participated in numerous activities with international delegations from Latin America. Miguel has chaired some of CCA keynote events including the CCA Lunch of the Americas and the Dinner of the Americas. Miguel is leading CCA Alberta’s vision of being the most active and relevant organization promoting networking opportunities and business links to connect Alberta businesses with the Latin America and Caribbean regions, and to connect Latin America with Alberta.

Miguel’s professional experience has been in international trade and business management for over 20 years. His expertise includes international business development, market research, business opportunities evaluation, contract negotiation, corporate and government relations, and international conference and trade show planning. Miguel has also a financial background with expertise in strategic planning and financial analysis.

He worked for the Consulate of Mexico in Calgary, as Economic Affairs and Community Relations Liaison Officer. He has worked in some consulting projects with Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Government of Alberta. His past experience includes working for DMG Events, organizers of the Global Petroleum Show, one of the largest oil and gas trade show in the world, where he managed the Latin America portfolio and the relationship with national & international oil & gas companies.

Miguel Cortines has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s in business administration from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He is the Founder and President of Casa Mexico Foundation and Innova International Corporation.

Travis Doupe is an accomplished oil and gas executive with significant leadership and business experience throughout Latin America and is a proven CFO for both private and publicly listed companies. He has more than 20 years of international experience, principally in oil and gas and was formerly the VP Finance and CFO of Suroco Energy Inc., a TSX-Venture listed Colombian oil producer that was acquired by Petroamerica in July of 2014.

Prior to this, Mr. Doupe worked in various financial roles based in Canada and throughout Latin America, including Sherritt Oil and Gas in Varadero, Cuba where he lived for two years and Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Havana, Cuba where he also lived for approximately two years.

Mr. Doupe has also worked in Mexico where he was the CFO of Torenco Energy Inc., a Canadian based, Mexico focused company that qualified for the first onshore bid-round in Mexico in more than 50 years and in Guatemala where he was the CFO of a Canadian publicly listed, Guatemalan focused oil and gas company.Mr. Doupe holds a Bachelor of Management from the University of Calgary and is a CPA – CA member in good standing with the Alberta Institute of CPAs.

Carlos Solorzano is a Partner at SMPS Legal. Carlos is a licensed lawyer in Mexico, residing in Calgary. He specializes in oil and gas, project financing and real estate. His practice focuses primarily on financial advising for projects such as commercial, residential and mixed-use developments, negotiation and development of strategic alliances and joint ventures, real estate and oil and gas. Carlos has also represented numerous clients in dispute resolution matters.

Before SMPS, Carlos founded SOLORZANO CORPORATION and served for several years at a top tier Canadian law firm assisting several clients on successfully establishing their businesses in Mexico. Carlos also worked for Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Consulate in Calgary being responsible for Mexico-Alberta economic affairs and providing potential investors with guidelines for conducting business. Before moving to Canada in 2002, Carlos practiced law with top tier law firms in Mexico representing Mexican and non- Mexican clients.

Carlos obtained his degree in Law from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in 1998. He participated in the Private, Public Partnerships Course and the Private Equity Transactions Course of Osgoode Law School, York University, in the years of 2006 and 2007, respectively, and the Alternative Dispute Resolutions Course in Alberta, Canada, in the year 2007. Carlos is fluent in both, English and Spanish

Benigno Rojas was appointed Senior Trade and Investment Director Latin America in Edmonton Alberta in September 2005. Benigno holds an MBA from the University of Wisconsin (Madison Wisconsin, 1984), having completed English as a second language at the University of Michigan in 1981 and a BA in Industrial Engineering at the Universidad Iberoamericana in 1979. Benigno has worked with the Government of Alberta since 2004, servicing in previous roles as Business Development Manager with the Alberta Research Council and Senior Trade and Investment Director with the Emerging Markets Branch/Ministry of International and Intergovernmental Relations. In 2008, Benigno was awarded a Gold Premier’s Award of Excellence, recognizing excellence in the Alberta Public Service, for his contribution to the Alberta International House.

Prior to joining the Alberta Government, in 2000-2004, Benigno worked with Whyte Reynolds International consulting in Calgary where he was responsible to the inception and coordination of the Canadian International and Environmental Group (CIEG) –A strategic alliance aimed towards fostering trade of environmental products, equipment and services into the Mexican market. Before Benigno’s immigration to Canada in 2000, he owned his company dedicated to manufacture and distribute lumber products for 14 years. Prior to his business, he worked for Citibank, ITT Mexico and the Ministry of Environment of Mexico.

Benigno was born and raised in Toluca, the State of Mexico married Gabriela and has two children (Benny & Gaby). Benigno and his family immigrated to Alberta Canada in 2000 and obtained their Canadian citizenship in 2005. Benigno currently holds the position of Senior Director, Energy and Environmental Services, with Government of Alberta’s Economic Development, Trade and Tourism Office

GUILLERMO MUNOZ

Guillermo is an accomplished senior-level engineering consultant with 25+ years of experience across multiple industries and management roles with hands-on expertise in different business areas including, digitalization, systems development and implementation, operations management, engineering, project management, business development, finance, change management, practice development, quality, project controls and general business administration.

Guillermo holds a master’s degree in Business Administration as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Guillermo’s core competencies include leadership, people skills, balanced technical and managerial abilities and strong communication skills. Very well organized and extremely detail-oriented, Guillermo is dependable and reliable. Guillermo is passionate about working and developing his teams to excel at safety and project delivery.

In previous roles, Guillermo was the Director of Oil and Gas, Practice and Quality at Stantec Consulting. Guillermo is passionate about his family and travel and he hikes as much as possible in the Rocky Mountains all year round.

DAMARYS ZAMPINI

Established executive, providing strategic growth via base-lining, focused planning and delivery. Damarys is a master connector with a global network, she works with various key stakeholders including Governments to help clients on their regional and/or international expansion, trade, new market entry and supply chain strategy in order to meet their “vision” aligned with their values for sustainable growth. Our group scouts innovative solutions for our clients who wish to objectively disrupt before being disrupted!

Damarys is a 20+ year energy professional who works with innovators who are creating the future of energy, for the planet. With experience in complex negotiations in the energy, mining, petrochemicals, construction, tech and supply chain industries. She applies her experience and education in Leadership, Strategic Management, International Trade, Business and Marketing and Technical SCM, as well as lean processes to make a real impact. She is a tri-lingual, multi-cultural professional.

She has a passion for inclusion and education, especially youth, who will drive our future of tech, innovation and address the world’s new energy needs. She was the creator of #YoungGPS in 2018, Youth Education Forum. She also is the founder and Director of two boards: Calgary Women in Energy (CWIE) and Women in Blockchain, with global outreach. She was also elected as a Director of the Board for CCA-Alberta (Canadian Council for the Americas) and sits on the Executive Committee for The Global Petroleum Show, The largest Energy show in the Americas, as well as a Judging Panelist of their GPS Excellence Awards Program.

Karl Bauer is an experienced Director of Sales Marketing with a demonstrated history of working in the oil & energy industry. Karl is a strong sales professional with years of service, specifically in the Snubbing, Freeze and Hot tap segments of the oil and gas industry.
Karls is an industry presenter and advocate of snubbing through Enform, (now Energy Safety Canada), for “Workovers and completions course”. He is a strong promoter for snubbing applications and honoured to be working with related industry committees.
Karl Bauer is the Sales and Marketing Director with the Snubco Group of Companies based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Michael Burak is the Founder and CEO of Languages in Motion Ltd. Translation/Interpretation Services. The company is dedicated to providing industry specialized, certified-level Translators and Interpreters for large corporations and firms, Government, Municipalities, small-medium size businesses, and individuals.

As the CEO of Languages in Motion, Michael does everything he can to be sure LiM’s clients are served in the best possible way and that their needs are met on time and on budget. Simultaneously, our company promotes the best translators and interpreters in the industry and helps them connect with the work they enjoy.

Michael has been Executive Advisor, past President and Founder of the University of Calgary Translation Association (UCTA) www.uofcta.com and the International Translators and Interpreters Foundation www.intta.ca. INTIF and UCTA help people develop the skills and tools they need to become successful translators/interpreters and to give them access to the tools they need to be successful in both business and in translation.

The organization provides a place for students and community members to develop their translation and interpretation abilities. Michaels holds a BA in Spanish; BA in Linguistics with a concentration in Russian. Entrepreneur Training at MKS Learn, Momentum, and Entrepreneurs Organization Accelerator (EOA).

Franklin Asprilla is an experienced operations manager with over 15 years’ experience in developing and implementing strategies to grow businesses in retail, grocery and education as well as in the financial sector. As a market strategist, devising new ways for businesses to gain a sustainable advantage over their competitors through new markets, effective customer relationships and cost reduction. Skilled in motivating teams to set and achieve personal, team and organizational goals, thereby achieving operational effectiveness.

Franklin’s professional experience includes the following positions: Budget Coordinator of Bank Coopdesarrollo (1994 – 1998). Second Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Fondecoop. Administrative Manager of the Cundinamarca-Boyaca Regional Bank Coopdesarrollo (1999), Assets Coordinator – Bank Megabanco (2000). General Manager of Salsynet Ltda (2000 – 2010). President of the Association of Economists Grancolombianos ASECOGRAN. Delegated of the Innovation and Talent Center (Universidad La Gran Colombia). Merchandising Services, Pricing and Promotion (Safeway / Sobeys – 2011 – 2018).

Mr. Asprilla graduated as a Master of Business Administration – 2009, Institute of Technology and Higher Education of Monterrey – Mexico. Franklin holds the following studies: Specialist in Pedagogy and University Teaching – 2010 Universidad La Gran Colombia, Specialization in Strategic Management – 2015 the University of Calgary, and Business Analyst – 2018 International Institute of Business Analysis. Given his excellent academic performance as a student in the program “Professional Management specializing in Strategic Management”, where Franklin graduated with honours, the University of Calgary chose him to be at the cover of the magazine: Continuing Education – Certificate Guide 2016 – 2017.

MARISABEL PEREIRA

Marisabel Pereira is a professional Business Development Consultant with R2M (Reliability & Risk Management). She has a key role in the organization as a Business Developer. Her position includes facilitation to understand project scope, deliverables and requirements as well as working on both technical documentation and training projects.

Marisabel has experience in Oil & Gas and Higher Education industries. She started her career in national and multinational companies in the upstream energy sector primarily in South America, as a field and lab engineer as well as a leader in technical/operational process documentation activities. Subsequently in her career, she has been involved in higher education while working with Yacambú University (Venezuela) for over 12 years; her time with the university included several positions including Computer Professor, Academic Director, IT Director, Campus Vice-Chancellor and liaison officer for international partnerships. Beyond developing a deep understanding of education and its relationship with the industry, this role allowed her to develop strong relationships with the business sector, community, and the government. More recently she has been participating in international energy business development ventures between Canada and Latin America. Fluent in both English & Spanish.

With an Electrical Engineering degree from the National Polytechnic University Antonio José de Sucre and Master courses in Business Finances from Yacambú University, Quality Assurance in operations experience and recently in 2019, some IT update courses from SAIT-Calgary, Marisabel continues to enhance her skills with applicable courses in the area of Business Analysis to elevate the clients and stakeholders approach to innovative solutions.

Karen Fosado is a business development professional with 15 years of experience in both public and private sectors, including economic development, energy, finance, electricity markets (renewables and non-renewables), pipeline infrastructure and modular buildings.
Graduating from the University of Calgary in 2002, she launched her career with Calgary Economic Development as a Business Development Manager, first managing the international portfolio, then the energy portfolio.

After five years with CED, Ms. Fosado accepted a position as Assistant Vice President, Trade and Supply Chain at HSBC Bank Canada. In 2011, she transitioned to an oil and gas career with Gran Tierra Energy, a company focused on exploration and production in South America and managed many aspects of their corporate planning, economic evaluations and budget forecasting before accepting a promotion to Manager of Investor Relations. After four years with GTE, Ms. Fosado then accepted a position as Director of Business Development at ATCO Group where she worked on assessing M&A opportunities and expansion into the Chile market. Ms. Fosado speaks, reads and writes Spanish at an advanced fluency. She has two daughters; Sofia and Olivia and is married to Terrence Philps.
